Celebrating Girls in ICT Day: Empowering Women in Technology
As we celebrate Girls in ICT Day on 25th April 2024, it is a moment to reflect on the strides made to empower
women in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This day not only celebrates the
achievements of women in ICT but also is a call to action to bridge the gender gap in this rapidly evolving
industry.
Empowering women in ICT is not just a matter of equality, but it is also essential for driving innovation and
economic growth. Diverse teams lead to better decision-making and increased productivity. By harnessing
the full potential of women in ICT, we can unlock new perspectives and drive transformative change in the
industry.
One area where women are making significant strides in ICT is competition and consumer protection. In the
Caribbean region, the CARICOM Competition Commission (CCC) is spearheading efforts to bridge the
gender gap through its cradle-to-grave advocacy initiative. This initiative aims to educate the youth about
competition and consumer rights, instilling foundational knowledge from an early age. By empowering the
next generation with essential skills and awareness, the CCC is laying the groundwork for a more equitable
and informed society.
Moreover, the CCC and the Caribbean Telecommunications Union are collaborating to bolster the
understanding of competition and consumer protection in digital markets. In an era where ICT permeates
every aspect of our lives, all spheres need to be adept and comfortable with technology to participate fully
in the marketplace. Reducing and eliminating barriers to entry for women begins with equipping them with
the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
